What is Tale-Gate?

Tale-Gate is one of 826CHI's signature events; our literary take on the classic street festival. It is designed to be a a one-stop shop for lit-lovers across the city, featuring readings from 826CHI's student-authors, performances from Chicago's live lit giants, and an array of literary sideshows. This event is 21+.

Can I buy my tickets online?

Tickets will be available at the door only: $10 per person.

Is food/drink included in the ticket price?

Food from Tale-Gate's army of local food trucks and booze from The Hideout's bar will not be included in the ticket price. However, 10% of all trucks' profits for the day come back to support 826CHI's programs.

How do I get to Tale-Gate?

Tale-Gate will be held at The Hideout (1354 W Wabansia), both inside and outside their building.

BY CTA RED LINE //

From the CTA Red Line:

Get off at the North & Clybourn stop, then take the North Ave bus or walk westbound on North to Elston (where Stanley’s is), make a right on Elston (northbound) and walk 2 blocks, then make a right on Wabansia (eastbound), then walk ’til you see the Old Style sign peeking out from behind the tree… hi, what would you like to drink?

From the CTA Blue Line:

Get off at Damen (North, Damen & Milwaukee), and walk toward North Avenue (about 40 feet). Take the North Ave bus/walk eastbound. Get off the bus/make a left at Elston & walk two blocks (northbound). Make a right on Wabansia (east) & walk ’til you see the Old Style sign peeking out from behind the tree.

BY CAR //  Take the Kennedy Expressway (I-90/94) to the North Avenue exit.

Proceed east on North Avenue to Elston, then go north (left) on Elston a few blocks to Wabansia, and turn right. The Hideout is ahead on the left by the Old Style sign.

If you go under the viaduct and reach Cortland or Armitage, on Elston, you’ve gone too far. Turn around and come back under the viaduct, then make a left when you see the sign on the fence saying “Hideout” with an arrow pointing left down Wabansia. There's a parking lot at The Hideout, and a ton of street parking on Elston.

What is this "team competition" you speak of?

The majority of Tale-Gate's fundraising will be done through team fundraising and competition.

Groups will fundraise for 826CHI before Tale-Gate, then, day-of, engage in an a series of Field Operations challenges to shed the ranks of the unworthy. The two winningest teams will face off in the Wisdom Storm finale, our epic, Family Feud-style quiz show. The last team standing will lift high the Chalice of Eternal Glory, 826’s most prestigious trophy—and Tale-Gate's ultimate reward.

Basically, we've got all sorts of antics planned—to join a team, visit this page.

You probably have questions...

Can I bring my kids?

Because this year's event is being held at The Hideout—a bar—we are unable to accomodate anyone under the age of 21. We aplogize if this is an inconvenience, but hope that you'll be able to find a sitter and kick back with us for the afternoon!
